From Linux to Widows When I first dipped my toes into Linux back in the days of Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” , it felt like stepping into a whole new world. Windows was what everyone around me used, but Linux opened a different dimension of computing — one built around freedom, flexibility, and an incredible sense of community. The Appeal of Linux Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop For me, Linux wasn’t just another operating system. It was about control . Unlike Windows, where everything felt boxed in, Linux allowed me to customize, tweak, and explore in ways that made the machine feel truly mine. The variety of desktop environments  — from the simplicity of GNOME to the elegance of KDE — gave me choices that Windows could never match at the time. I remember experimenting with Ubuntu , then moving on to Linux Mint  for its smoothness and ease of use, and even giving Kubuntu  a run for its polished KDE desktop . Each distro had its personality. Some offered stability, some focused on performance, while others simply looked stunning with all the “eye candy” — and the best part, all of this came free of cost . The Practical Challenges But as exciting as Linux was, my profession eventually brought me back to reality. As a lawyer, much of the specialized legal profession software  that I needed was built only for Windows. While Linux offered flexibility, compatibility was always a challenge . Workarounds like Wine or virtual machines were never as seamless as I needed them to be in a fast-paced legal environment. Back to Windows — With Gratitude to Linux Eventually, practicality won over passion, and I shifted back to Windows. But the years I spent with Linux were not wasted — they taught me how computers work beyond the surface, how to think differently about software, and how to truly appreciate open-source innovation . Linux remains a reminder that there are always alternatives, often better ones, waiting outside the mainstream. As Kerala prepares to welcome Onam once again, I dedicate this blog to the festival that is woven into the very soul of every Malayali. Onam is not just a harvest festival—it is the cultural heartbeat of Kerala, celebrated by people across religions, castes, and communities with equal fervor. The Legend of Mahabali and Vamana To the uninitiated, Onam—or Thiruvonam—commemorates the annual visit of Mahabali, the mythical king who once ruled Kerala. His reign was said to be a golden era—without hunger, poverty, or inequality. People lived in prosperity and happiness. Such was his popularity that Lord Indra grew envious and sought the intervention of Lord Vishnu. Answering Indra’s prayers, Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a humble Brahmin boy, and approached Mahabali during a sacred ritual. As tradition demanded, Mahabali promised to grant Vamana’s wish—three feet of land. To everyone’s astonishment, Vamana began to grow until he encompassed the universe. With one stride he measured the heavens, with the second he covered the earth, and for the third, Mahabali humbly offered his head. Vishnu, moved by Mahabali’s selflessness, banished him to the netherworld but granted him the boon of returning once every year to visit his beloved people. That day is Thiruvonam, the essence of Onam. Onam as a Harvest Festival Traditionally, Onam also coincided with the completion of the harvest. Fields would be abundant, homes would be filled with joy, and families would celebrate together. It was a time when agriculture was central to life in Kerala, and the festival reflected that deep bond with the land. Childhood Memories of Onam Growing up, Onam was one of the highlights of the year. My father, who worked as Deputy Chief Engineer in a PSU, seldom had long vacations. But for Vishu, Onam, and Christmas, we always made it a point to travel. For us, Onam meant going to my father’s ancestral home in Thrissur, where cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents gathered. The house would come alive with laughter, games, and traditions. My grandmother’s birthday, which fell on Uthradam (the day before Onam), added another layer of celebration. I fondly remember my sisters creating intricate Pookalams  (floral carpets), each day adding new flowers and designs. The temple visits in Thrissur remain etched in memory—Vadakkunnathan, Paramekkavu, Thiruvambady, Shankaran Kulangara, Kottapuram, and of course Guruvayur, the abode of Lord Guruvayurappan. Then there was Pulikali  (the tiger dance) and Kummatti Kali , both unique to Thrissur, where artists would visit homes and perform. But nothing matched the grandeur of the Onam Sadhya —the traditional vegetarian feast with dozens of dishes served on a banana leaf. The payasam, of course, was the highlight for us children. As I look back, those times seem so simple yet so fulfilling. Today, with the demands of work and life, Onam often passes by quietly, and nostalgia takes me back to those carefree days of joy and togetherness. Onam in Today’s Kerala Over the years, Onam has changed. Many of the traditional practices—like children collecting flowers for Pookalam or women performing Kaikottikali —are rarely seen today. Modern celebrations often revolve around TV specials, shopping festivals, and online gatherings. Yet, the spirit of Onam endures. It remains a festival that unites Malayalis across the globe, reminding us of our roots, our stories, and our values. As we adapt to new lifestyles, let us also preserve the timeless traditions that make Onam so unique. Guruvayur Temple ( Image Credits- Wikimedia Commons) Yesterday, we set out for Guruvayur  to attend a family wedding. The drive itself carried the familiar excitement and calm that only a trip to this holy town can bring. We stayed at KTDC Nandanam , the modern-day incarnation of the old Travellers’ Bungalow. The Plaque seen at the KTDC Nandanam, Guruvayur, is part of history Though updated with modern comforts, the place still holds that charm of being a welcoming stopover for pilgrims and visitors. I owe everything I have achieved in life to His blessings. Every visit feels like a spiritual recharge, a moment of transcendence that no other place can match. The occasion was the wedding of my cousin’s daughter—a simple yet beautiful celebration. It turned into a warm family get-together, with cousins and relatives sharing laughter, memories, and joy. By evening, we returned to Palakkad, but as always, Guruvayur left us with a deep sense of peace. A visit here is never just a trip; it is a soulful experience  that refreshes the mind and heart.

Once again, Rahul Gandhi  has made headlines—not for proposing constructive solutions or inspiring hope, but for dismissing the achievements of a rising India  with reckless and baseless rhetoric. Recently, he claimed that the Indian economy is dead . Let that sink in. At a time when India is clocking a GDP growth rate of over 6.5% , outpacing most developed and emerging economies, a man who dreams of leading the nation declares its economic engine lifeless . This isn’t just ignorance—it’s a deliberate distortion  meant to demoralize the Indian spirit. Let’s be clear: India is not perfect.  We have challenges—rural unemployment, inflationary pressures, and structural hurdles. But to brand the entire economy as "dead"  is not just economically dishonest , it is politically dangerous . Because what Rahul Gandhi is really doing is attacking India’s momentum , India’s entrepreneurs , India’s small businesses , and the millions of workers  who build this nation from the ground up. When foreign investors are looking at India as a growth engine  for the global economy… When Indian startups are breaking into new sectors and Indian companies are becoming global players… When the country is seeing record-breaking exports , massive infrastructure development , and historic capital expenditure  in defense, roads, and railways… …Rahul Gandhi chooses to declare the economy “dead.” For what? Political mileage? Media attention? Or just another casual insult aimed at India under the guise of opposing the ruling party? Let us not forget—this is not the first time he has undermined the nation on global platforms. Whether it’s mocking India abroad , casting doubts on our democracy , or questioning the legitimacy of the Indian judiciary and military , his comments repeatedly echo the narratives of India’s adversaries . This isn’t opposition politics—it’s irresponsible anti-national posturing . And it comes from a party that ruled India for nearly six decades , during which the License Raj , chronic unemployment , crony capitalism , and institutional decay  were the norm. Under Congress, growth was slow, policy was paralyzed, and corruption was normalized. And now that India is breaking free from those shackles , the same old dynasty cannot stand to watch the rise of a self-reliant, assertive India . Rahul Gandhi, let us remind you: India today is the 5th largest economy in the world , on track to surpass Germany and Japan in the next few years. Our services sector is booming , exports are thriving, and foreign direct investment is flowing in. India’s digital infrastructure —from UPI to Aadhaar—is setting a global example. The world is watching India—not as a victim of colonial hangovers, but as a global leader  in the 21st century. And you say this economy is dead ? No, Mr. Gandhi. What is dead is the relevance of your politics . What is dead is the Congress party’s connection to the aspirations of New India . What is dead is the old elite mindset that believed power was an inheritance, not a responsibility. The people of India are awake, aware, and ambitious . They know when criticism is genuine, and when it is just sour grapes masquerading as concern . We are not here to blindly worship any government. We will question, we will hold them accountable—but we will not allow irresponsible politicians to insult the dignity of our country . So the next time Mr. Gandhi speaks of India’s economy, maybe he should first step out of his echo chamber , speak to an Indian entrepreneur, visit a port, a factory, or a startup hub—and most importantly, read the data .
